Dryer Vent FAQ

What should I use to vent my clothes dryer?

The best choice for dryer venting is the U.L. Approved 2158A ProFlex Clothes Dryer Transition duct.

ProFlex™ is constructed of a heavy duty, fire resistant 4 ply aluminum foil laminate that is specifically designed and sanctioned for gas and electric clothes dryers.
Can I use vinyl ducting to vent my clothes dryer?

No! Chimney Solutions does not recommend using vinyl ducting to vent your clothes dryer.

Why does it take my dryer so long to dry clothes?

A blocked or partially blocked dryer exhaust may be the result of increased drying times. Proper maintenance of your dryer duct includes:

• Keep area around the exhaust opening and adjacent surrounding areas free from the accumulation of lint, dust and dirt

• The interior of the exhaust duct should be cleaned regularly

• Regular inspection of the duct to be sure that it has not become crushed or otherwise restricted

I am unable to vent my dryer to the outside because of its location. What should I do?

Chimney Solutions has available a product called the ProFlex™ Indoor Dryer Vent Kit. Product code: TDIDVK. This kit can be used to vent your electric clothes dryer indoors when outside venting is impossible. It is ideal for houses, apartments, condominiums and R.V.’s. The kit comes complete with a 4” x 5’ U.L. Listed Clothes Dryer Transition Duct, plastic lint reservoir and 2 plastic clamps.
This product is specifically designed to trap lint when outside venting is impossible.

GAS DRYERS MUST BE VENTED OUTDOORS!

Will there be a problem running dryer vent ducting up and through the attic?

Yes, proper installation of a dryer exhaust is to vent outdoors through the closest sidewall possible. Venting up and through an attic is not recommended as warm air is caused to pass through a cool space and long or excessive lengths of duct will result in decreased efficiency of your dryer.
Do’s and Don’ts to installing a dryer exhaust?

• Do not use vinyl duct.

• Do read the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

• Do not exhaust dryer into any wall, ceiling crawl space or concealed space of a building, gas vent or other common duct or chimney.

• Do keep exhaust duct as straight and as short as possible.
   

My utility room is tiny and the dryer barely fits in the room against the wall. How do I attach ducting?

Chimney Solutions offers a product called the Space Saver™ Aluminum Dryer Venting Duct. This product allows you to place your dryer within 3” from the wall. This product is ideal for tight clothes dryer applications with ceiling or wall installations. The Space Saver™ telescopes to desired length or can be trimmed to a shorter length with shears. Also available is a product which will allow you to lengthen the Space Saver™ by 20 inches.

Can I paint the vent cap on the outside of my house?

Regular household paint will not adhere to the materials used to manufacturer the vent cap. However, all intake and exhaust caps are molded with a high impact plastic with UV inhibitors and are available in white or brown.

How can I keep birds out of my vents?

Chimney Solutions offers a number of solutions to keep unwanted pest from entering your vents.
PB10 – A galvanized metal clip on screen is available for 4” dryer, bathroom and stove exhaust hoods. It is very easy to install and is removable for vent cleaning.
PB50 – A plastic vent cover is available which fits over most 3” and 4” exhaust vents. It is secured into place with screws and can be easily removed for lint cleaning. This product is available in white or brown

There is a draft from my dryer vent, is there anything I can do to prevent the draft?

The Draft Blocker was designed to keep cold air from entering your home through the dryer. It will fit all 4” dryer vent ducting. The flap opens when dryer is operating and shuts the out the cold air when the dryer is not in use. Air can move in one direction only – out of the house.
