Fireplace SAFETY
Checklist
Please review
these safety tips to promote fire safety in your home.
- Start the season with a
clean
chimney.
- Make sure the
damper is open to
let smoke escape.
- Remove all combustible material
such as baskets, decorations, kindling, firewood, etc. from the
vicinity of your fireplace or wood stove, keeping all such items
at least 36" away.
- Use a fireplace screen that is
large enough to completely cover the fireplace opening for spark
protection. The screen will also help to keep
children and pets
safely away from the fire.
- Use a heavy duty grate, and
stack the fire to avoid logs rolling out of the fireplace during
burning use
- Have fireproof gloves, a tool
set and a covered ash bucket on the hearth and ready for use
- Never use gas or flammable
materials to "freshen up" a fire.
- Test your smoke detectors, and
install fresh batteries
- Install a carbon monoxide
detector in public areas on each floor of your home, such as
hallways.
- Never burn colored paper such
as magazines or wrapping paper.
- Don't burn plastics; never burn
painted, stained or treated wood - the fumes are poisonous.
- Don't use your fireplace as an
incinerator to burn pizza boxes, Christmas trees or stacks of
paper or cardboard.
- Don't leave the fireplace
unattended while wood is burning.
- Keep the top of your woodpile
covered; wet wood is harder to light, creates more smoke and
makes your chimney dirty!
All chimneys should also be
inspected:Before each
heating season.
Before installation of a new fuel burning appliance (wood stove,
gas logs, new furnace or
water heater).
Before purchase of a new house.
Immediately after a chimney fire or house fire.
If your home has been struck by lightening.
If your chimney has been hit by a falling tree, or other events
that may have caused impact damage.
If you notice water stains on the inside or outside of your home
in the vicinity of the chimney.
If the roof has been replaced.

Sweeping/Cleaning
Chimney fires are a major cause of house fires in the United States.
Creosote (a form of unburned fuel) builds up on the chimney flue walls, if
the debris is not cleared out then it’s only a matter of time until it
catches fire.
Tuckpointing
Grind out the old mortar and squeeze in the new, strike the joints.
Dampers
The rubber gasket seals off the chimney from the outside. No more rusty
steel dampers in your firebox. No more cold breezes sneaking through your
steel damper.
Chimney Crown
Covers the top of the chimney around the clay flue liner. Deteriorating,
cracked or broken crown will cause leaks into your house damaging wood
drywall electrical etc… Installing a new concrete crown or an application of
a crown seal will fix any potential water damage.
Chimney Caps
Rain can damage the inside of chimneys, it causes mortar
deterioration, rusts out your steel damper, damages the flue liners and fire
box. Rain caps keep the rain out and minimize wind flow over your chimney
which can also give you better draw on your fire. Also keeps
critters out.
Flashing
Chimney
Flashing which is usually made of copper or aluminum, seals the joint
between the chimney and the roof. It protects the joint against leakage
from rain or melting snow. If constructed properly, it accommodates
slight movement between the chimney and the roof.
Water-sealing
Masonry materials deteriorate quickly when exposed
to the freeze/thaw process in which
moisture that
has penetrated the materials periodically freezes
and expands, causing undue stress. Water in the
chimney also causes rust in steel and cast iron,
weakening or destroying the metal parts.
Liner Systems
Standard clay tiles line masonry wood burning chimneys.
These tiles or flue
liners are the first line of defense against chimney fires, if there are any
cracks in the tiles they need to be replaced...ASAP!
Animal Removal
Humane removal of birds,
raccoons and other animals.
