Chimney Caps
What can I do about the
birds in my chimney ?
The chimney swift, a colony bird from South America, spends the summer in
your chimney nesting, raising their young and getting ready for the long
flight back to the forests of Peru. Chimney Swifts on average eat several
times there weight in flying bugs such as mosquito's.
Being a colony bird
they will return to the same chimney they hatched in, each
year. We start seeing the birds in this area mid to late April. They stay
until mid Sept and are usually gone by the first cold snap.
These birds can
have 1-2 nesting a year depending on weather and other factors. The hatching
period usually lasts 4-5 weeks with a 1-2 week period between hatchings.
The
chimney must be cleaned to remove the bird debris and any flammable material
that may be in the chimney area. After cleaning the fireplace and chimney,
the next step is to install a stainless steel chimney cap.
This will prevent
birds, squirrels and other animals from entering the chimney along with rain
and leaves. From then on your bird and small animal problem is solved and
you are the hero.

After we install a chimney cap on your house be sure to tell your neighbor
about us as the birds that were in your chimney, will head for the closest
uncapped chimney.
Rain can damage the inside of chimneys, it causes mortar
deterioration, rusts out your steel damper, damages the flue liners and
firebox.
Rain caps keep the rain out and minimize
wind flow over your chimney
which can also give you better draw on your fire. Also keeps critters out.
Listed below are several good reasons to
have a chimney cap:
-
Keep out rain, snow and
sleet.
-
Keep out animals and
birds.
-
Keep out leaves, twigs
and other debris which could lead to a blockage or
chimney fire.
-
Keep sparks from
leaving the chimney and igniting nearby combustibles.
-
Help eliminate wind
induced downdrafts.
An Investment in
Chimney Protection
The best investment you can make to protect your
chimney is a good quality chimney cap. A chimney cap prevents entry
of rain and animals and helps contain sparks. Chimney caps can also
help solve certain chimney performance problems.
RAIN The number one cause of damage to chimneys is rain and weather. Rain
is absorbed into the bricks and mortar, then weather changes cause
expansion and contraction that leads to deterioration of the masonry
that can compromise your chimney's structural stability.
BIRDS & ANIMALS Birds and animals are attracted to chimneys because they offer a
nice, tall place to live with secure protection. However, animal and
bird nests are highly flammable, baby birds make incessant noises
that will nearly drive you mad, and if the critter can't exit
through the top of the chimney, she and her babies will try and exit
through the bottom - right into YOUR house! Raccoons and squirrels
can get into the house and cause thousands of dollars in damage to
furnishings, rugs, curtains and everything in reach in their
desperate attempt to escape from your home. They also harbor lice,
fleas, rabies and other diseases that can put your family at risk.
Most folks figure that the baby critters will grow
up and leave the nest, exit the chimney top, and then you're safe to
use the chimney. Not true! First of all, far too many babies cannot
escape the chimney and will die in there, creating horrible odors
and maggot infestations. Second, the remaining nesting materials can
block the chimney so that fumes and smoke cannot escape, as well as
providing fuel for a raging chimney fire.
"Keep in mind that migratory birds are
considered endangered and cannot be removed by law. Chimney sweeps
are not even allowed to remove a nest that's being used by chimney
swifts, for example. After the animal or bird evacuates your
chimney, on its own or through forced eviction, you must have the
chimney cleaned to remove the nesting materials, then install a
chimney cap to prevent their return. The screening built into the
cap is carefully designed to allow proper drafting yet keep out
uninvited wildlife guests."
SPARK ARRESTORS & PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS A good chimney cap also includes a screen that helps control sparks.
On windy days, chimney draft can be affected and if sparks exit the
chimney they can ignite nearby trees, leaves and other flammables.
If your home is located within a wooded area, a chimney cap with a
spark arrestor is strongly recommended.
COMPLETE SELECTION We offer a wide range of caps to suit any chimney: round, square,
rectangle or multi-flued. Custom built models are also available for
challenging installations. We offer chimney caps in copper or
stainless steel. Other materials are available, such as galvanized
metal and aluminum, but these materials are not as durable. A
quality chimney cap is a one-time investment that will protect your
chimney for a lifetime.
Chimney caps are made from a variety of materials.
The most common are galvanized, stainless steel, and copper. Caps made
of stainless steel and copper will last much longer than those made of
regular galvanized metal and normally carry an extended warranty.
Spending a little extra for a good quality chimney cap will be money
well spent and there will be no danger of rust staining the chimney.
Our certified chimney sweeps will be happy to assist you in safety
inspections, chimney repair, chimney reline questions or any fireplace,
dryer venting needs.
